Association of Mutual Insurers

Royal London is founder member of the Association of Mutual Insurers (AMI).

The Association of Mutual Insurers

The Association of Mutual Insurers (AMI) was formed on September 13, 2004 by 13 mutual insurers in the UK. The founding members collectively represent £5.6 billion in premiums, which equates to 4 per cent of the UK's premiums and 70 per cent of the mutual insurance market. The UK mutuals collectively represent 6.8 per cent of the non-life market and 6.4 per cent of the life market.

Lobbying and public relations

AMI primarily focuses on two areas: lobbying and public relations. The lobbying will take the form of representing the UK mutuals to the FSA, UK Treasury (eg the Myners Review), UK politicians, the IASB, the ABI, European Union, and the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS).

It is the aim of AMI to comment on insurance issues where they specifically affect mutuals. Industry-wide insurance issues will continue to be handled by the ABI and, similarly, Friendly Society issues will be handled by the AFS.

Working groups

The AMI Board has appointed two working groups: the Legislation Committee (currently focusing on the Myners Review) and the Communications Committee (focusing on public and government relations, as well as press and media relations).
