As part of our commitment to CSR we have the following schemes in place:
Carbon Offsetting
Carbon offsetting was introduced in January 2007 for all business flights. This means that a levy is automatically added to each booking made. This money is sent to The Woodland Trust, a registered charity, who plant sufficient trees to offset the carbon produced by these flights. There are ten specially designated UK woods which are owned by the Woodland Trust for their Carbonplus+ programme. Five trees will be planted for each tonne of carbon dioxide produced, with the quantity of CO2 being calculated using standard DEFRA guidelines.
Recycling
Old mobile phones
We have set up a partnership with Redeem to recycle unwanted mobile phones and raise money for charity. Redeem operates on behalf of a number of charities in the UK although we send all money raised to our national charity partner, Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Waste
By separating out all the material we throw away, we reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by around 30% and reduce the cost of removing our waste by the same amount.
Electrical and Electronic Equipment
We aim to reduce the quantity of electrical and electronic equipment waste going to landfill and incineration and increase its re-use, recovery and recycling in accordance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (WEEE).
Timber
In our Wilmslow office we have started to take part in Action for Sustainable Living's timber recycling project. This means that all timber waste that was previously sent to landfill is now recycled and reused within the local community. We are currently investigating the possibility of rolling out this project to other Royal London sites
Toner cartridges
We use recycled toner cartridges and buy remanufactured cartridges.
Energy
IT equipment, photocopiers, fax machines etc are still using energy even when left in standby mode. This translates into higher electricity bills and increased carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore,, we encourage our employees to switch off their PCs/laptops, screens and printers, photocopiers and fax machines when they leave the office unless there is a specific instruction to leave them on.
Green Commuting
There are a number of practical alternatives that we can all consider when planning our journey to and from work which help to reduce the impact on our environment.
In Wilmslow we encourage car sharing, cycling and walking to work as well as public transport.
These schemes are constantly reviewed and all new opportunities to improve our environmental performance are considered.
